The "Rittner Bahnl" Railroad
The Rittner Railroad (Italian: Ferrovia del Renon) has been in operation since August 13, 1907. In the beginning, the railroad – which the locals refer to lovingly as the "Bahnl" – ran on the Bozen/Bolzano – Klobenstein/Collalbo route. The 1,000-meter difference in altitude was a problem for neither the passenger service nor the freight. The train was quick, reliable, and ran regardless of the weather. For those times, the railroad was an unbelievably modern way to convey passengers, merchandise, livestock, and building materials in both directions. As a result, the local economies of the villages and towns along the railroad experiences a boom.
As a result of overuse and poor maintenance as well as a lack of modernization, the train – which had, by this time, passed the half-century mark – the route from Bozen/Bolzano to Waltherplatz / Piazza Walther to Maria Himmelfahrt / Maria Assunta was abandoned in 1966. Since then, a cableway has connected the city of Bozen/Bolzano with the high-altitude plateau of Ritten/Renon.
The "Bahnl" is in use still in use on the route from Oberbozen/Soprabolzano to Klobenstein/Collalbo. The romantic route winds it way through a lovely landscape of forests and meadows. Passengers can enjoy the magnificent panoramic views of the awe-inspiring mountains of South Tyrol.
