The Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle
On the sunny slopes above the town of Meran/Merano you'll find the blossoming gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle. In the center of the gardens, the enchanted castle itself is located. Count Trauttmansdorff had the medieval ruins restored around the year 1850. The Austrian Empress Sissi visited there twice for a wintertime rest. Now, the Museum for Tourism – the Touriseum – is located in the castle. It tells an exciting story of 200 years of tourism in Tyrol.
More than 100,000 plants, including 3,000 different species, have been established in the four garden areas: the sun gardens, the water and terrace gardens, the forest gardens, and the South Tyrolean Landscapes. A botanical trip around the world in eleven stages, with the following attractions: A grotto with multi-media show on the evolution of plant life, a geological mosaic where you can walk through the geological world of Tyrol, an Orchid House, the Japanese Garden, eleven pavilions designed by artists.
